In a candid recent post on her website, Kourtney Kardashian discussed the somewhat surprising way she’s managed to maximize her sleep as a busy mom of three: co-sleeping.
The Keeping Up with the Kardashians starshares three kids with her ex, Scott Disick: sons Reign Aston (3) and Mason Dash (8) and daughter Penelope Scotland (5). According to Kourtney, co-sleeping was a natural development that occurred after she welcomed her first child.
“Getting the kids to sleep through the night in my home was different for each individual child,” she explained. “When I had Mason, co-sleeping just kind of happened naturally. It’s what worked for all of us to get the most sleep, so I quickly embraced it.”
Kourtney explained that she made sure to research both the benefits and some reported criticisms of co-sleeping, which can be controversial. The American Academy of Pediatrics‘ official stance on co-sleeping is: “Infants should sleep in parents’ room, close to parents’ bed, but on a separate surface designed for infants. Ideally, for the first year of life, but at least for the first 6 months.” However, plenty of parents opt to share a bed with their kids anyway.
When the TV personality had her daughter, the family made adjustments and started following the style of co-sleeping touted by The Attachment Parenting Book by Dr. Sears. By that point, both kids were sleeping “most nights” in Kourtney’s bed with her. “We made it work and I really just followed [Mason’s] lead for when we both felt he was ready to sleep in his room,” she explained.
Funnily enough, Kourtney’s youngest son always slept on his own, in his own bed. By age 2 1/2, Reign was sleeping through the entire night.
Overall, the reality star encourages families to do what works best for them. “[As] a working mom, if I didn’t have much time with the kids during the day, at least I knew we’d have the evening together as a family,” she explains. “Every kid is different, so if it works for you and your family, that’s the most important thing!”
Have you ever tried co-sleeping with your kids?
